Abstract art Jake Berthot

Jake Berthot (1939–2014) known for his work in abstract, monochromatic, and naturalistic styles of painting, Berthot was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on March 30, 1939. He initially studied commercial art at a school in Pittsburgh before moving to New York City where he worked as a window dresser in the Bronx while beginning to paint.
Berthot had his first gallery show in New York in 1963 and showed throughout his life at the McKee Gallery and the Betty Cuningham Gallery in New York. Surveys of his work were held at Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1988 as well as at the Phillips Collection in Washington in 1996. From 1974 on, he also taught at the Cooper Union, Yale University, and the School of Visual Arts.(artforum.com)
